I absolutely LOVE stories like this! I have always said that you really, really, really, really, really, really, need to have a super-trained ear to tell the difference between Monster Cable and standard Radio Shack small gauge speaker wire (sold on a spool at a SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper price per foot). This guy takes it one step further (and better). I'm bummed because I put really cheap speaker wire into my wall (for my HDTV) and could've put coat hangars instead! :(

A reader forwarded us a post from the Audioholics Home Theater Forum and its author says no. He says his brother ran an experiment on him and four other audio aficionados listening to a new CD from a new group blindfolded. Seven different songs were played, each time heard with the speaker hooked up to Monster Cables, and the other time, hooked up to coat hanger wire. Nobody could determine which was the Monster Cable and which was the coat hanger. The kicker? None of the subjects even knew that coat hangers were going to be used. I went to see the Foo Fighters last night at in Worcester, MA at the legendary DCU Center (formerly the Worcester Centrum)! Indeed, it was a great time and one of the best rock shows I've scene in history!!

The Foo Fighters, headed up by front man Dave Grohl, are in support of their latest CD, "Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace". I found it odd that with all of the arenas present in New England that the closest they could come was Worcester. However, it has traditionally been difficult catching a show by the Foo. If I were to guess it may be because they have a relatively low "market presence" in NE (yes, there is such a thing measured for bands). Here are some highlights and "cool stuff" from the show:

- They opened with "Let It Die", my number 1 favorite Foo song of all time. I was tripping. Check out the video below.
- They had an amazing stage and lighting setup. 4 big screens behind the band showed videos and effects.
- They came out and performed their acoustic set "in the round". Right in front of us!! Plus, the "unplugged" members of the band joined them on-stage for that.
- The violin chick....grroowwwllllll!
- Dave was hilarious whenever he bantered with the crowd.
- 3 song encore was amazing!

Also, Dave brought his daughter to the show. We could see a toddler dancing in the middle in the mixing stage. It took us a bit but then recognized the mom as Dave's wife (from the DVD). He would occasionally walk down the ramp and play for her, so cute!


We didn't shoot this video as we had MUCH better seats than this guy. But way cool for him to capture and post from our show!

PSA: Starching the perfect shirt

So I think I found the answer to ironing and starching a shirt that is NEAR the quality of professional pressing/dry-cleaning. I'm wearing a blue polo today that, despite my hour drive and two meetings, has maintained it's crispness. Hears the secret:
1. Iron with minimal steam first, the entire shirt
2. Let stand for an hour to dry
3. Iron entire shirt again with starch (Niagara seems to be the best)*
4. Let stand for one hour on hangar
5. Apply a "gentle glazing" of starch to the entire shirt while it's on the hangar
6. Do not put back in closet as it will crumple (unless your closet isn't stuffed to the max like mine).

*When applying starch during ironing process, apply an even glaze across area to be pressed, holding canister approximately 6" from shirt. Also, make sure you use distilled water in your iron. This is supposed to keep the iron clean and prevent the "yellowing" affect on white shirts.

Guitar Hero II

Ok, I realize I may be 5 years behind the times, but I broke down this weekend and bought a PS2. Why, you may ask? The "killer app" for the PS2 is Guitar Hero that's why! It is incredibly fun. I've had it since Friday and have beat the game at medium level in career mode. And yes, don't be fooled, "Freebird" is the hardest godd@mn song!! It had something like 1200 notes (of which I missed about 100).

Wow! I cannot believe what I'm seeing!!

I was cruising Wikipedia today and decided to lookup Sam Brownback. I heard his name mentioned last night as being one of the Republican senators who opposes Bush's plan to surge troops in Iraq. After Bush's speech last night I really liked Barak Obama's feedback (being interviewed by Keith Oberman on MSNBC). So, I decided to do a look up on 'Barak Obama'. Much to my surprise an article about the antichrist was referenced (shown below). So, I submitted it to Digg! We'll see what happens.

I rented "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" on DVD and watched it last night. What a funny, charming film! I read the book when I was teenager and even got a chance to see the BBC produced mini-series (I was a "PBS Kid" back before it was cool to be one). While I'm not as big a fan as most, I believe that to enjoy the film you had to have read the book or at least a strong familiarity with the satire in the story. Douglas Adams's literary work permeates much of our pop-culture still, so if you're paying attention you'll get a chuckle out of it here and there.

I give it 3 out of 4 stars. I would give it a 4 but I'm sure if I were bigger fan I probably would probably nix it to 3 anyway. ~pg

According to IGN (now owned by FOX), George Lucas is putting the feelers out for a writing staff to pen the new Star Wars series. The article describes it as a mix of live action and CGI. When I read that I suddenly had a terrible notion. What if the new series is all CGI based on live motion (like most CGI is done)? Even worse, what if it's the tacky CGI as seen in Toy Story and Polar Express?? Please George, don't ruin it and make the show for your grandkids (again)!

Podcasting in radio free Dover, NH

Thanks to my MP3 player I have become hooked on podcasting! Of course, my 2 hour daily commute was a motivating factor as well. If you're curious to see what I'm listening to these days, slap this file into your favorite RSS aggregator, download a sampling, and go to town!

I finally picked up a micro-drive MP3 player. I toiled for the longest time over this as I was very much drawn towards the 20gb iPod photo. However, my experience with the iPod shuffle and iTunes set me straight. I researched extensively and finally decided on the Creative Zen Touch. For the same price as the iPod I get twice the storage (40gb). Plus, DRM is completely optional so I do not need to use Creative's Media Organizer (although I've grown quite fond of it). I can attach it to any Windows XP machine and move files on or off at will without having to load drivers, software, etc. As of this blog entry I have 2000+ songs (and podcasts) on it with more than 28gb free on the player!

England Trip: August 2005

Cheerio mates! I was asked by my company to journey to England and evaluate a software vendor. It was my first time out of the US and boy am I knackered. I stayed for a half a fortnight on the first floor (UK speak for second floor) in a non-listed hotel. It was a little cooler in Alsager and I had to wear a jumper most evenings. Surprisingly though I did not need my mac or brolly as we only saw rain very briefly on one evening out.

We had a great time at Blakey's on one evening. In fact, after a couple of bitters I took the stage accompanied by the local talent. Here are some photos. Ta!
